Virtues and the importance of
teaching them to children

The Virtues - what are they and why would we teach them to our children? Are they primarily religious or are they also relevant to philosophy? What is their function in the world? What is the scope of their development? Are they best avoided if you want to get ahead or have they been relevant to people who have made their mark in the world? Is it enough to know the virtues or should they be practised? For the minimalist at heart if you chose only one, which one would be best?

Philosophy Courses

Synopsis
In addition to addressing the above questions, this talk will also consider teaching children from a parent's perspective. How is this best accomplished? What are the three factors in teaching children? When do they best learn the lessons needed for life? What will rule their life?

This talk will explore what we mean by virtue and the virtues and will look at the wealth of moral knowledge and universal truths embedded in our cultural tradition. It will examine the key virtues of East and West and what the wise say about teaching the young and how and when the teaching of the virtues would best be accomplished.

Speaker: Elizabeth Vincent
Elizabeth Vincent spent an idyllic childhood in the country in Far North Queensland and having completed High School, she studied Arts, majoring in Maths and Psychology. Remaining ambivalent about which career to pursue, she did not complete her studies and eventually travelled and worked overseas for a number of years. The time she spent working as a live-in nanny with a wonderful Florentine family in Italy convinced her that teaching young children was the career for her. She returned to Sydney where she gained her qualifications in Preschool and Primary education and, during this time, joined the School of Philosophy. She worked as a casual teacher in both the Catholic and public education systems for a number of years before joining the NSW Dept. of Education permanently in 1988. She was promoted to Assistant Principal in 1998. She has spent time as an English consultant, co-runs a professional development committee for executive staff and has conducted many workshops for teachers and parents. Her special areas of interest the development and education of young children, emotional intelligence, the Italian Renaissance, poetry, cake cooking and decorating and Harry Potter books.
